The Legacy of Louis Dobermann

Apolda, Germany, late 1800s
Louis Dobermann was a tax collector, a night watchman, and the local dogcatcher. He carried money through dangerous areas and needed a protector. He didn't want a dog that just barked; he needed a dog that could stop a man.
The Thuringian Pinscher
Using his access to the dog pound, he mixed several breeds. The exact recipe is lost to history, but it is believed to include:
* The German Pinscher (for size and terrier tenacity)
* The Rottweiler (for strength and bone)
* The Beauceron (for herding and color)
* The Greyhound (for speed)
The Result
He created a dog that was fearless, loyal, and intimidating yet intelligent. He created a "man-trailing" dog.
Today, we honor his vision by maintaining the working ability of the Dobermann. It is a beautiful show dog, yes, but it must first be a capable, fearless guardian. That is the legacy we carry forward at Von Ligerhaus.
