Critical Socialization Period: Weeks 8-16

The Window of Opportunity
The period between 8 and 16 weeks is the most critical time in your dog's life. What they experience—and how they experience it—will shape their view of the world forever.
The Rule of 7s
By the time your puppy is 12 weeks old, they should have:
* Been on 7 different types of surfaces (carpet, concrete, grass, gravel, etc.)
* Played with 7 different types of objects
* Been in 7 different locations
* Met and played with 7 new people
* Been exposed to 7 challenges (climbing a box, going through a tunnel)
Neutrality is the Goal
We want a neutral dog. A dog that sees a stranger and doesn't flee, but also doesn't immediately need to greet them. We want a dog that hears a loud bang and looks to you for direction rather than bolting.
Key Tip: Do not flood your puppy. Exposure should be positive. If they show fear, increase distance, let them observe, and reward calm behavior.
